Nagura auxiliary stones from the Japanese brand Naniwa are used to quickly and easily prepare an active grinding slurry on water stones before the actual sharpening begins. Using a Nagura stone significantly enhances the overall sharpening experience and helps you get the absolute most out of your water stones.

Easy to use with the “Splash-and-Go” method—preparation is quick and intuitive. Nagura stones require no lengthy soaking:
1. Moisten the Nagura (simply spray it lightly with water or submerge it briefly)
2. Wet the main stone
3. Create a slurry: Rub the surface of the sharpening stone with the Nagura stone. In just a moment, a rich, milky slurry full of active abrasive particles will form on the surface, immediately enhancing the sharpening process.

How to Choose the Right Grit?
Naniwa offers Nagura stones in 10 different grits, ranging from coarse #220 to extremely fine #12000. We recommend following a simple rule:
Always choose a Nagura stone with the same or higher (finer) grit than your sharpening stone.
If you use a coarser Nagura on a fine stone, large abrasive particles will be released onto its surface. The resulting slurry will then be coarser, which could unnecessarily scratch both the fine surface of the stone and the blade itself.

Maximize Shine and Sharpness
The resulting slurry is always a combination of particles from your whetstone and the Nagura stone. If you use a Nagura with a finer grit than your main whetstone, the finer microparticles will mix with the whetstone’s abrasive and significantly enhance the polishing effect.

Comparison with the Naniwa Dressing Stone: Nagury are designed to create a paste on the whetstone before sharpening, while the Dressing Stone is used to clean the surface of the whetstone after sharpening. Nagury are only lightly soaked, while the Dressing Stone needs to be left submerged for a longer period of time.
